Saudi Led Coalition Needs to Be on Shame List

The United Nations secretary-general should immediately return the Saudi-led coalition to his “list of shame” for violations against children in Yemen, Human Rights Watch and 19 other organizations said today in a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. On June 6, 2016, the secretary-general announced that he was removing the Saudi-led coalition from his shame list “pending the conclusion of [a] joint review” of the information included in his annual report, published on June 2. The media reported that Saudi Arabia and its allies had threatened to withdraw hundreds of millions of dollars in assistance to the UN if the coalition was not removed from the list. The secretary-general’s decision is made in the wake of overwhelming evidence of violations by the Saudi-led coalition that have killed and maimed hundreds of children in Yemen during fighting as they sent in airstrikes and other forms of violence. This is unjust and the responsible parties must pay for their crimes. Something must be done to right this wrong!
